Experience
I find that students have a wide range of needs and learning styles. Some students just need a little extra boost to get them through a tough spot in a class. Some students need someone to sit with them while doing homework to keep them on track. Some students need coaching on how to even approach the study Math or Physics. Some students learn better by having concepts explained clearly. Some students learn better if they are asked a series of leading questions, so that they find the answers themselves. One of the great joys of tutoring is learning how a student thinks and works so that I can best support their studies. A lot of times, I find that students are much more competent than they first think. They just need a little help finding their strength. Of course, better grades often end up being a result as well. I have been tutoring in a formal capacity for four years. Before that, I helped classmates in college and grad school in an unofficial capacity. Many of my friends from college credit me with the fact that they passed their Physics and Math classes. I also have 9 years of experience working with ages pre-k through high school in a Sunday School setting I have a bachelors degree in Physics and Mathematics from St. Olaf College and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minnesota. Along with tutoring, I also currently work as a Research and Development engineer at a large, technology driven, manufacturing company.
